How to Frame a Jersey: Shadow Box, Hanger and Folding Tips

Short answer: wash and fully dry the jersey, fold the sleeves behind the body so the name or number faces out, pin it flat to an acid-free backing board, and seal it in a deep shadow box with UV-protective glazing. Hang it away from direct sunlight. If you'd rather not fold it at all, a wall-mounted jersey hanger is the quick alternative.

Here's the step-by-step, plus a few tips that keep stitched lettering looking sharp behind glass.

Pick your display style

There are three common ways to put a jersey on the wall:

  • Shadow box frame. A deep frame (usually 1.5–3 inches) with a backing board and glass or acrylic front. Best protection, cleanest look.
  • Jersey display hanger. A wall bar or clear hanger that holds the jersey open. Easy to swap out, but it leaves the fabric exposed to dust and light.
  • Flat frame with mat. A thinner frame works for lighter jerseys, but thick stitched numbers can press against the glass, so a shadow box is usually the safer pick.

What you'll need

  • A shadow box big enough for the folded jersey (measure after folding, not before)
  • Acid-free foam board or the frame's fabric-covered backing
  • Stainless steel pins or a needle and clear thread
  • Acid-free tissue paper for padding
  • UV-filtering acrylic or glass, if the frame doesn't include it

Step 1: Clean and dry it first

Any sweat, sauce or dust will be sealed in with the jersey, and stains can set over time. Wash it gently and let it air dry completely. Our guide on how to wash a football jersey covers the details. Never frame a jersey that's even slightly damp.

Step 2: Fold so the name and number show

Decide which side you want facing out. Most fans show the back, with the name and number, but the front works well for a team crest.

  1. Lay the jersey face down on a clean, flat surface.
  2. Fold each sleeve in toward the middle at the shoulder, or angle them slightly outward for a "worn" look.
  3. Fold the sides in so the width matches your frame. Keep folds behind the jersey, not across the lettering.
  4. Tuck the bottom hem under if it's longer than the frame.
  5. Flip it over and smooth it out by hand.

Step 3: Keep the stitching flat

Stitched twill numbers and letters are thicker than the fabric around them, so they can ripple if the jersey is stretched unevenly.

  • Place acid-free tissue under the shoulders and chest to fill out the shape and stop sagging.
  • Smooth from the center outward, never by pulling at the numbers.
  • If a crease won't relax, steam it lightly from a distance on the inside of the fabric. Don't put an iron on the lettering.

Step 4: Secure it to the backing

Pin through seams and folds where the holes won't show, such as under the collar, along the side seams and at the sleeve folds. For a more permanent mount, a few loose stitches with clear thread through the backing board hold it without visible pins. Avoid glue or tape on the fabric.

Step 5: Seal and hang

Close the frame, check nothing is pressing against the glass, and hang it on a wall that doesn't get direct sunlight. UV light fades colors over time, even behind ordinary glass. Steer clear of bathrooms and damp basements too.

DIY or professional framing?

DIY works well for most fan jerseys and is a fun afternoon project. A framing shop is worth considering if the jersey is signed, has a lot of sentimental value, or you want custom matting with photos or ticket stubs alongside it.

FAQ

How big of a frame do I need for a jersey?

Fold the jersey first, then measure. Many adult football jerseys fit a frame around 32 x 40 inches with the sleeves out, or smaller with the sleeves folded in.

Will pins damage the jersey?

Fine stainless steel pins placed through seams leave little to no visible mark. Avoid pinning through the numbers or name.

Can I frame a jersey without glass?

Yes, with a display hanger, but expect more dust and fading. Glass or acrylic is the better choice for long-term display.

Should I wash a jersey before framing?

Yes. Wash it gently and air dry it completely so nothing sets into the fabric.
