How to Wash a Football Jersey Without Ruining It
Share
Short answer: turn the jersey inside out, wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent, and let it air dry. Skip the dryer, skip the bleach, and never iron the numbers. That's it. Do those things and your jersey will look sharp for many seasons.
Below is the longer version, with the small details that make the biggest difference.
Why football jerseys need a bit of care
A football jersey isn't a plain T-shirt. The names, numbers and patches are layered onto the fabric, and a lot of them are stitched twill. Heat and friction are what wear them down. Hot water loosens adhesive backing. A tumble dryer shrinks the fabric slightly while the numbers stay the same size, which is how you end up with puckering and bubbles.
The good news is that gentle washing solves almost all of it.
Step 1: Check for stains first
Game day tends to leave a mark. Nacho cheese, wing sauce, a spilled drink in the third quarter. Treat stains before the jersey goes anywhere near the machine.
- Blot (don't rub) fresh spills with a damp cloth.
- Dab a small amount of mild liquid detergent onto the stain and work it in gently with your fingers.
- Let it sit for 10â15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
- Avoid stain sticks with bleach or strong solvents near the numbers or lettering.
Step 2: Turn it inside out
This is the single most useful habit. Turning the jersey inside out keeps the stitched numbers, nameplate and any patches from rubbing against the drum and other clothes. If you have a mesh laundry bag, put the jersey inside it for extra protection.
Step 3: Wash cold and gentle
Use the delicate or gentle cycle with cold water. Cold water protects the colours and the backing behind the numbers, and it's kinder to the fabric overall.
- Use a small amount of mild detergent. More soap doesn't mean cleaner.
- Skip fabric softener. It can leave a film on performance fabric and weaken the bond behind the lettering.
- Never use bleach, even on white jerseys.
- Wash with similar colours, and keep it away from towels, jeans and anything with zips or Velcro.
Prefer to hand wash?
Hand washing is the gentlest option, and it only takes a few minutes. Fill a sink or basin with cold water and a capful of mild detergent. Turn the jersey inside out, submerge it, and swish it around for a couple of minutes. Rinse in fresh cold water until the soap is gone.
Don't wring it out. Press the water out with your hands, or roll it up in a clean towel and squeeze.
Step 4: Air dry, always
The dryer is the number one way jerseys get ruined. Instead:
- Lay the jersey flat on a drying rack or a clean towel, or hang it on a wide plastic hanger.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade colours over time.
- Give it a few hours. Most jerseys dry quickly at room temperature.
If you absolutely must use a dryer, use the lowest heat or air-only setting, keep the jersey inside out, and take it out while it's still slightly damp.
What about ironing?
Ideally, don't. Wrinkles usually fall out as the jersey hangs. If you do need to smooth it, use a low setting on the inside of the fabric, keep the iron moving, and never touch the numbers or lettering directly. A handheld steamer from a distance is a safer bet.
How often should you wash a jersey?
If you wore it for a few hours to watch the game at home, it probably doesn't need a full wash every time. Air it out and spot clean as needed. If you wore it to a tailgate, sweated in it, or spilled on it, wash it as soon as you can. Stains and sweat set in the longer they sit.
Storing your jersey between seasons
- Make sure it's completely dry before you put it away.
- Hang it on a wide hanger or fold it loosely with the numbers facing in.
- Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
- Avoid plastic dry-cleaning bags, which can trap moisture.
Quick checklist
- Pre-treat stains gently.
- Turn inside out.
- Cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent.
- No bleach, no fabric softener.
- Air dry. No dryer.
- No iron on the numbers.
